When you think of ways to support sustainable fashion, you might think of buying clothes from sustainable brands or buying second-hand clothes. But what people often forget is that the easiest way to support sustainable fashion is to wear and take care of the clothes you already own. It is not only the easiest way; it is also the cheapest way and the most environmentally friendly way.

But how will you make sure your clothes will last longer? Keep reading to learn some helpful tips on how to take care of your clothes, so you can wear and love them longer.

1. Wash less

You might have a habit of throwing your clothes in the laundry bin after every wear. But next time, make sure to only wash your clothes if they are visibly dirty or don’t smell great.
The more your wash clothes, the quicker they wear out. Clothes will be drained of their colour and the elastic part will stretch out. Try to wear your clothing item at least three times before you put it in the washing machine.

2. Wash cold

When you put the temperature of the washing machine too high, it can cause certain items of clothes to shrink. Washing your clothes in colder water prevents fading. To be sure if you’re using the correct temperature, always check the label of the clothing item. It depends on the fabric.

3. Don’t overload your washing machine

Of course, it is a waste of water if you put only a few clothing items in the washing machine. But, be careful not to over-do it, and cram too many clothes in the washing machine, because this can damage your clothes. If the washing machine is too full, your clothes will rub together causing fading. Besides that, your clothes will not get clean properly. Fill 2/3 of the washing machine.

4. Airdry your clothes

Let your clothes dry on a drying rack, instead of in a machine dryer. This is a simple eco-friendly swap. A machine dryer is one of the most energy-intensive household appliances. According to Green America, airdrying your clothes can reduce the average household’s carbon footprint by 2,400 pounds a year. Besides that, a machine dryer greatly shortens the life of clothing. It beats up the clothes and it wears the fabric away.

You can either line-dry your clothes or let your clothes dry on a rack. Whatever fits your living space best. The benefit of airdrying your clothes is that it gently bleaches your whites and naturally sanitizes fabrics.

5. Reduce the amount of detergent

You don’t need to use as much laundry detergent as you think. More detergent does not equal more cleaning. A large amount of detergent can make your clothes dull and stiff.

6. Use a delicate bag

Put delicate fabric in a laundry bag, to keep them from tearing. Think about underwear and garments. A lace bra, for example. A delicate bag will help preserve the lifespan of these clothing items.

These are 6 ways to clean your clothes while damaging them as little as possible. Doesn’t seem too difficult, right? What is the first chance you will make?
